Ethical Tourmaline Ring

Because I want my business to be an ethical and sustainable as possible I spend a lot of time browsing ethical gemstone fairs (it’s a hard life!) and at a fair in Bristol last year I found (and fell in love with) this fantastic emerald-cut, olive-green Tourmaline. At over two carats it packs a punch by itself but I also purchased two baguette-cut yellow Sapphires to go either side.

I let the stones guide me in the design. Step-cuts hark back to the clean, geometric shapes of the Art Deco age so I went for a classic design with a contemporary edge, turning the shank of the ring into a feature step-cut band, adding some modern glamour to the antique look of the stone setting. To keep the piece as sustainable as possible I also used recycled yellow and white 18ct gold for the setting. I love the collaborative design process but this time I wasn’t working with a specific customer so I turned to social media to help me make some design decisions. Thank you to anyone who commented on my different setting options!

Even though this wasn’t a commission, it didn’t stay around for long and has already gone off to a new home. I was a bit sad to see it go but it’s lovely that a more personal design of mine was popular and appreciated.
